Did you prefer one narrator over the other? Did you find yourself relating more easily to Lucy or Bert because of your own experiences or personal characteristics?

I enjoyed both narrations and I liked both characters equally. The beauty of this for me was I could identify with both girls. The dread of growing up, punctuated by the excitement of maturing, the love of books and words and knowledge. It was so easy to slip into the story.

I enjoyed the narrators alternating between Lucy and Bert with each chapter. The character development of both was complete. I could identify with Bert being a bit of a rebel since that was somewhat like me growing up with a near-perfect sister. I felt I could never be as perfect as her so I chose to act out to establish a separate identity. I was also like Lucy, being a lover of books and an avid Nancy Drew fan.

I enjoyed the format of the chapters alternating between Lucy and Bert. I related more to Lucy since reading was an important aspect of my childhood. Not only was I interested in books and reading but I remember my mother always reading on the couch and my father reading the newspaper and medical journals. And Bert reminded me of several friends I had while growing up.
