If you were Carl, how would you have handled your relationship with Crete?

How do you interpret the relationship between Crete and Carl? Carl consistently turns a blind eye toward Crete's questionable behavior. Do you think this is a weakness of Carl's character, or do you believe that Carl is rightly loyal to his brother? If you were Carl, how would you have handled your relationship with Crete?

I can't imagine tolerating Crete's behavior. I never would have allowed my daughter to work for him. I think Crete's behavior did not deserve Carl's loyalty.

I would have grown a pair, told him where to go and moved away with my daughter to keep him very far away, in fact I would have done it way before there was a daughter! That relationship was toxic and Carl was just as responsible for all that happened because he could have stopped it. He allowed his daughter to be in danger - unforgivable!

IF Carl truly suspected Crete of suspicious behaviors, he would not have allowed his daughter to work for him. He would not have turned a blind eye. Yet there were references to his suspicions about him. This one thing did not resonate true with me, but I am afraid I projected my own feelings as well as knowledge of the story into my thinking.

Crete had enormous control over Carl, out of blood loyalty and small town ignorance. The entire story would have been different if Carl was able to get out from under Crete's influence.

Crete was there for Carl during all of his childhood and all through his adult life, making him feel secure
In this way Crete became a father figure for Carl. I probably would have handled the situation the same as Carl. Family was family in this small town

The thing was, Carl actually killed first. Crete covered up Carl's crime (granted, they completely handled the situation stupidly). So I think in addition to Carl being loyal to Crete because of blood, the fact that Crete covered up the killing amounted to both emotional & actual blackmail, making it difficult for Carl to act much differently than he did.

Carl was blindingly loyal to Crete, which is hard to understand, of course. However their entire family history was based on not asking questions especially as gravediggers . "There were shady circumstances, too, but Dad was known, as Danes have been known for generations, for looking the other way.

RE: If you were Carl, how would you have handled your relationship with Crete?

This relationship, to me, was truly the "weight of blood" in every way. Crete was mean and controlling, but his one "soft side" (if you can call it that) was for Carl. Carl, although basically not a bad person, was forever connected to Crete by blood and could not break that tie totally. He was weighted down by the loyalty he felt toward his brother. That doesn't excuse Carl's ignorance of Crete's actions, but rather explains them.
