What did you think of Britt-Marie when you first encountered her? Did she remind you of anyone in your life? Where do you think Britt-Marie goes at the end of the novel?

Britt-Marie had a damaged childhood, clearly growing up with a mother who let her know that she was not as important as her sister. Britt-Marie grew into an awkward adult who continues to have a hard time letting others see who she really is, because she is afraid of that person herself, I think. Only towards the end of the book does she decide that maybe it is not too late to find and express herself. She, too has been living in a fairy-tale world of sorts, but so far she has not experienced any happy endings. Having stared the cold, hard reality of Kent's unfaithfulness in the face, I think she is ready to create a happy ending, although it might take her awhile, and she might find it right back where she started.
She reminds me of many people I know who ultimately discover that they create their own happiness and the general path of their own lives. In fact, she reminds me of myself at times. What stands in our way of being happy is usually fear. That was certainly true for Britt-Marie.

Everyone has a Britt-Marie in her life. I know I smirked at all her rules and rants and I felt she was a damaged person on the inside and just tried to ignore her. It was good to hear her story and to know why and glad to see she had the courage to travel and find herself again.

I think Britt-Marie travels for a while and gets her head together. Then she turns around and heads back home and asks Alf to forgive her and he says yes and they live happily ever after but he still drinks strong coffee!
