Did you find the multiple-voice narrative effective?

The novel alternates between narrators, giving us many of the characters’ perspectives but mostly going back and forth between Lila and Lucy. Did you find this multiple-voice narrative effective? Could the story have been told successfully in one voice?

I felt the author rose to the challenge of a multiple-voice narrative approach. She fully develops each character and successfully limited the number of viewpoints presented so the reader didn't get confused.

Most of the time I don't care for multiple-voice narrative, but it really didn't bother me in this book. I'm not sure I would have liked the book as much if it had only been one narrator.

I liked the multiple choice narrative. It held my interest and I couldn't wait for the next voice to continue the story.

I think it worked very well here, in fact it kept me turning the pages. I was eager to find out more of each girl's story!

Initially I found it somewhat confusing but after a couple of chapters I believe the mulltiple voice narrative added immensely to the book. I was able to get each characters voice without interference from the other characters.

I liked the multiple-voice narrative, it was very easy to follow both Lila an Lucy’s stories; other important characters had a voice which helped develop their personalities and understand them better. I don’t think a single voice narrative could have done such a good job.

At first, I didn't understand what was happening - because I probably was not paying attention to the chapter headings, but once I did, it very much enhanced the readability of the book for me. Observing the characters from two different perspectives, edified the story immensely, and explained the reactions of many of the characters at two different points in time during the range of the novel.

Like Shirleyp - I didn't get it at first but once I went back and realized that not only was it being told by multiple voices but also happening at different times, it fell into place.

I think it did a great job forwarding the story. I like having multiple view points of what ever is occurring. It adds different layers to the storytelling.

I think it worked well in this novel and kept the reader's interest.

I don't think a one-voice narrative would have worked at all in this novel. We came to know and love or hate each character through multiple-voices. I was totally involved in this story through each of the characters.

i thought it was very effective. It was a bit confusing in the beginning, but once you realized how she was writing the book you couldn't put it down.

Yes, I liked it. That said, I think having the names of the two women so similar, Lila and Lucy, and the fact that their voices were so similar was a bit confusing at times. I had to think about whose story I was reading at the beginning of each chapter.
