What is the significance of Adrien and Léon's story, and how does the cadenza Adrien leaves to his son fit in?

When Michel asks his father, Adrien, who Léon was, his father replies, 'You're making me remember, and I don't want to remember.' What do you think the significance is of the story of Adrien and Léon and the musical score, the cadenza, that Adrien leaves to his son? Why do you think Elio is so determined to help Michel discover who Léon was and how he died? In the end, do you feel Michel finds out what his father didn't want to remember?

Adrien and Leon's story lent the mystery to this novel which held my interest. I had to learn the answer to Adrien's existence! Elio's solution to his identity was quite intriguing.

One of the things I found interesting about the novel was the fluidity of the sexual relationships depicted. Although Adrien was married to a woman and produced a child, it seemed to me that he'd had an affair with Léon, and loved him dearly. I think the cadenza may have been written while Léon was in a concentration camp (maybe even penned in blood, given the mention of it being in "brown ink"?) and it somehow made it back to Adrien. Perhaps Adrien left the work to Michel so that Michel would understand him a bit better (i.e., was saying in effect "Find Me.")

I agree with kimk and doubt that I could say it better or add anything

I became as fascinated in the cadenza as Elio was. The Jewish connection was fascinating. I missed the brown ink what a good catch, thanks Kirk. I can imagine someone in a concentration camp jotting down snipers of music.
