What is the significance of each section title?

What is the significance of each section title? For example, 'Tempo,' the title of the first section, is a musical term meaning the speed at which a passage of music is or should be played. It is also the Italian word for time. How do both meanings resonate? What are the meanings of the other section titles? How are the themes of time and music interrelated?

RE: What is the significance of each section title?

At first sight they are all obviously refer to musical terms. I think the first section, Tempo, refers to the speed at which the relationship between Miranda and Samuel evolves. The second section, Cadenza, is the same as in a musical score - a passage inserted into the movement. Elio and Michel have a relationship that is inserted between Elio's first and final love affair with Oliver. The third and final section, Capriccio, is a term for more lively, free music. This, of course, is the reunion of Elio and Oliver at the end of the book when they can finally be keenly alive and free.

"Tempo" means the speed or pace of a piece of music or it can mean "time." The importance of the different times in the life spans of the characters is a definite theme in this first section of the book and recurs throughout the story. "Cadenza," a showy individualized passage, is also the key to the mystery of Leon and his relationship to Michel's father. "Capriccio," free-form and virtuosic in nature is the almost fantasy episode Oliver has with Erica and Paul. "Da Capo," from the beginning or a repeat of music is the reuniting of Elio and Oliver, a return to and a repeat of their love.

The description of the section titles by carolec is perfect. I cannot improve upon it.

Yes to carolf’s comments. Other than Tempo I had to look the words up. I think I would have liked a handy translation.

Each title helps to carry on the musical presence in the book.
