Do you agree with Samuel's observations on love?

Miranda tells Samuel that she doesn't know if she is the type who 'even likes people, much less falls in love with them.' Samuel asks if it's just that she grows tired of them and can't remember why she thought they were interesting at first. She's shocked because his assessment is so accurate, but he responds that he thinks we're all like that. Do you agree?

No, I do not think that all people are like that. In my experience most people believe that they do like other people; and I suspect that if they do not, it's a hard thing to admit - even to oneself.

I do not agree. All of my friends like people and many fall in love or are in love. As far as growing tired of someone and not knowing why you liked them in the first place I think that is a harsh statement. More likely you have a friend or lover and you just grow away from them. You find you have different interests.

I believe that Samuel has noticed that many people are so involved with their selves, their jobs, their goals and perhaps their children that they do not put much effort into keeping a relationship interesting. Observing the high divorce statistics, he might have a valid point. Often relationships originate because one person has a use for or needs the other person. When the situation changes, the relationship doesn't contain enough "love" to justify the work needed to keep it going; this might relate to losing interest. Aciman's characters appear to develop more than a passing interest. Aciman writes to allow his readers to feel that sentiment.

No I don’t agree. I for one, love people and getting to know them. I’ve been in a long term relationship for over 25 years and I have never grown tired of this person and forgotten what I liked about them.. we are constantly growing and changing, but if you truly love someone , you will grow and change with them.

No. Having been married to my husband for 62 years and liking him more today than I did when we were first married, I am hardly a person who would think that. I also have many long time friendships. I do not grow tired of the people I like. If I don't like someone, I don't spend any time with them. Certainly we are always growing and changing, but that doesn't necessarily mean we cannot or do not maintain our relationships with lovers or friends.

I question myself just how much I believe in Samuel's observations. I am a loner and it takes a special type person to be in love with or love me. I may have more of his thoughts than even I like to admit.
