Arthur claims he's running away from responsibility, but there's truly no escaping it. "Take it or reject it, what follows? Toil or guilt. The only thing to do is choose between them." Do you agree with Arthur's take on responsibility? What do you think Sally and Eve are running away from?

RE: Do you agree with Arthur's take on responsibility? What do you think Sally and Eve are running away from?

I agree with the toil part, but maybe not so much the guilt on rejecting responsibility. Sometimes saying, "I've had enough" and shucking a specific responsibility is freeing.

I think Eve in particular is running away from having to figure out what to do with herself now that she's no longer employed. I don't see that as running away from responsibility. And I think Sally isn't so much running away as giving herself space to assess her relationship.

I agree with both assessments of Sally and Eve. They are not running away, but creating space to evaluate options and possibilities. Life can throw opportunities in your path, but it can be a choice whether to accept the responsibility to engage a task or walk away.

I agree with the postings that Sally and Eve are not running away, but reassessing what is important to them. Sally may reconnect with her family, but in different ways. Eve now knows her high stress, high profile maybe, and high paying job was not really giving her what she wanted from life. Both take a break to adjust and make new, better choices.
