How does her perspective bump up against our current social media culture, in which everyday life is often recorded in photos and text?

I understand the perspective, especially as the trip progressed. It's like traveling by car - it's just moving forward, an action taken to reach a destination. But I'm surprised that she didn't find beautiful scenery to try to capture. Even on a road trip we'll occasionally stop at a landmark to take a picture or two.

That's pretty contrary to our social media culture, of course, where many people document every aspect of their lives.

I truly enjoy taking pictures, but there have been those times when I realized I could either mess with the camera and miss the moment, or try to just live the experience. I’m grateful for the occasions where I had the good sense to realize this, and have carried away some happy memories!

I think since the experience on the narrowboat was so different, they were fully immersed in the experience. It wasn't meant to be a vacation so taking pictures seemed out of place.

I agree with tmmarti - I find myself as I get older, not taking as many pictures and trying to live in the moment. I have so many pictures that I rarely look at that I try now to just remember the full experience - sights, smells, feelings, etc.

Apparently, In the past, Sally only took photos while on vacation. I’ve always loved taking pictures of the everyday moments and find it hard to believe that Sally never saw a view or moment that she wanted to photograph.

The canal became life, not a trip or a vacation. Especially for Sally, can’t say why, too spoilery. Anyway, if it’s the life you are living, you don’t take pictures, you just live it.

I take and have always taken pictures --sometimes non-stop and others just to catch one fleeting moment. I don't think of pictures as something restricted to vacation time. Never do I consider being in a vehicle of any kind, car, ferry, train, plane, bus as merely going from Point A to Point B. For me, photography is a creative art--like painting. But it is also a way of capturing a memory--one that leads to an expansion of that memory when viewed. My husband on the other hand, feels memories should be only in his mind--BUT, as we travel he will often point out a scene that shows varied textures or colors or interesting compositions so maybe I'm developing his artistic eye?
