Maybe, despite the privileged lifestyle he led, he had actually left his heart in that small town long ago - and, as can sometimes happen- older age can bring some regrets about decisions and actions.

I believe he felt a sense of responsibility and had a desire for connection. Since he had a relationship with June later in life he must have known some of the details of his son's life, and had a appreciation for the effort June had put forth to give his grand daughter a normal upbringing. (It's also possible he knew Tate was not his daughter.)

Good question. Makes me wish I had someone waiting to give me a nice chunk of change...

Not positive why he did. Good stuff for dreaming.

Perhaps out of guilt of not pursuing his relationship with June earlier then he did, which might have been her decision rather then his. Perhaps sadness of not knowing his son and granddaughter. I do feel it was odd that he left everything to her and not something to the older daughter. Even the girl that was not really his he raised her and should have been more considerate. He should have realized the problems he was causing.

It would have made sense to me had he left her a third of his estate, perhaps he knew Tate had her own money and needed to grow up a bit, not sure why he would have excluded any of them unless he felt they had been given enough during his lifetime. Worry a bit about Lindie with so much money!

Could be he felt guilty he never did anything for his child in the years past? And maybe he realized how his own children were and decided it was time they learned that not all is theirs for the taking. He may have known the one daughter was not his. After all he and Diane didn't really get along. I think he stayed and married her to save June from what she would do to her nad Llindie?

I think he always loved June and rekindled that love in the last years of their lives. That made Cassie all the more dear to him, plus I think he wanted to somehow show in public his secret love of June that he never exposed during his lifetime.

As someone else said, good question. I have to assume from June, he knew Cassie didn't have a dime and he felt some guilt that June didn't either. Cassie would sound like a young June in June's stories.

Because. He knew she would do the right thing. He knew it would pull the family together.

I think partly guilt and partly because he felt it was the right thing to do. Looking back on his life he may have wished he had handled it differently

I think Jack learned all about Cassie from his later life experiences with June. He would have known of her struggles and the potential the money would have for changing Cassie's life~~being able to restore June's home etc. It could have been an attempt to right the wrongs that had prevented him from being with June and his child.

RE: Why did Jack decide to leave everything to Cassie?

June was the love of his life, and Cassie was all that remained that was a part of both of them. Both his daughters had no need of his money. Giving the money to Cassie allowed him to finally publically acknowledge how important June had been to him. He had had no chance to raise his own son, and by acknowledging Cassie he was able to do for her what he couldn't for his son. I'm not really sure why he didn't also include Tate and Elda as his heirs, unless he figured they already had so much and didn't need it.

He came to know Cassie through the relationship he finally shared with June in later life. Tate and Elda had lived a fine lifestyle through the years, but his son had not. He was able to hand Cassie that which her father had missed out on and celebrate his love and regret that way.

I think he knew that it would mean the most to Cassie. He didn't need to leave money to the other children. And maybe he felt it was time for the secrets to come out.

I think it was the author's way of bringing conflict and interest into the story as the sisters fought it out

RE: Why did Jack decide to leave everything to Cassie?

I am not sure. Perhaps he felt guilt at leaving June to raise their son. I am sure in later years he felt this was a mistake. Perhaps he did not have fatherly feelings toward his daughters and he knew they had money and Cassie did not. It would, however, since the estate was large, to have spilt it between the girls. Maybe he felt he wanted them to meet each other. I don't believe Jack was a very strong man and could not face doing all this himself

RE: Why did Jack decide to leave everything to Cassie?

With such a large estate, I am not sure why he didn't give Tate and Elda a token amount of money with the lion's share going to Cassie, who really needed it. It certainly would have precluded all the conflict at the beginning of the story, but then we wouldn't have had the pleasure of finding out how they all came together as a family.

RE: Why did Jack decide to leave everything to Cassie?

I think he left it to her for several reasons. First it was his way of acknowledging she was his granddaughter that no one even knew about. He was not really a part of his son's life- the author never tells us whether Jack and Cassie's father ever had a relationship but I am assuming not. This was a way he could contribute and make a difference in her life. And thirdly, I wonder if he knew that Tate was not really his daughter. It sounded as if he was not fully invested in his relationship with Tate.

RE: Why did Jack decide to leave everything to Cassie?

The attached question is why did he reach out to June. It was through this reconnection that he learned more about Cassie. Her love of art certainly made him think offering Cassie a chance June had not had. Then look at Tate, a clone of her mother and his other daughter had built a life for herself and had a large support family.
