Why did June stay with Artie even after Diane died, when she might have gone back to Jack without any repercussions for Lindie?

She realized it would never work long term with Jack because he was always looking to show her the best of everything instead of just being with her and loving her. He loved being a celebrity and June wasnt necessarily in love with the part of him that was glamourous.

I think she had grown to love Artie and knew there was a difference between love and passion - which is what she had with Jack. She also had gratitude for Artie for being father to her son, for giving her respectability in their town etc.

By that time I believe she had discovered a deeper meaning of love and responsibility. I think she truly loved Artie in her way because of the good husband he had been to her and father he had been to Cassie. Plus, by then she saw the advantages of raising a child in a small town atmosphere, somewhat insulated from the larger problems in life until they are better able to deal with them.

I do feel that June came to love Artie and that she would not tarnish their marriage they had built. The reality of what they had, what he had done for her and her family outweighed the pull of young dreams.

I believe June stayed with Artie for a couple of reasons. One is that she had grown to love him. In the beginning of the book before Jack came along she was happy to be marrying Artie. Lindie was the one who felt June needed more excitement. Second, June took her obligations very seriously and she put her son's happiness before her own. Artie was a good father and husband whereas Jack was more exciting but offered little in the way of stability for her and her son.

I believe June was a very loyal person and wanted to maintain the relationship she had built with Artie. It was the practical choice, but I believe she came to care for Artie.

June had probably grown to love Artie by that time and felt her life with her husband and son were more important. She says in one of her letters that her love for her son was her greatest love.

She had a life in the town and a real family with Artie. She was safe in St Jude. Would life with Jack been stable. The times they enjoyed later were continuations of the romance they first had.
