Why didn't Lindie give June Artie's letter?

Lindie had a prejudice, in this case, for Jack. Even though the romance would take June away from her, Lindie's adventurous nature took over and wanted to see her friend get the most out of life.

Lindie felt Artie was the wrong man for June. She wanted June for herself, as it turns out, but if that wasn't going to happen she thought June should have the exciting and romantic life Jack could give her. She withheld the letter so June would think Artie had abandoned her out of disinterest.

She did not think Artie was the right person for June. She loved June and if she could not have her she desired a better more exciting life for her which Jack could certainly give her.

She wanted to keep June for herself for as long as possible.

As noted above, Lindie did not care for the circumstances of their engagement, she wanted to see June live a more exciting life with Jack, keep her away from Clyde.

Since Lindie loved June so much and realizing that she could never attain that love she wanted, she transferred her longing to the hope of bringing Jack and June together. That was coupled with her disdain for Artie and the engineered relationship between Artie and June.

I think everyone above has pretty said what I was thinking. Lindie did not want June to marry Artie. She felt he was being forced on June and she was pushing Jack on her. I think she was looking for a real romance for June.

Artie was not part of Lindie's plan for June's future. Lindie thought if she managed the situation just right, she could make the outcome of Jack and June's relationship fit into her idea of what was best for her friend.

Lindie was very protective of June and felt that the marriage to Artie was being forced on June for the benefit of Cheryl Ann and Clyde. She felt like June was too easily persuaded to marry Artie. Keeping the letter from her was a way she could keep June wondering if she was doing the right thing by marrying Artie.

I agree that she didn't think June should marry Artie. I also think that she had hopes to enjoy the romance with Jack in some way throughnherbiwn connection with June.
