Religion and how it impacts you

Gates, which was raised as a Catholic, underscores acting according to one’s conscience. She writes: “Faith in action…means going from the margins of society and seeking out those who are isolated and bringing them back in.” How does this work with your experience with religion?

RE: Religion and how it impacts you

My faith is so important to me and how I live my life. If I have brought one person closer to a relationship with Christ, then I think I have fulfilled my duty on this Earth. My faith makes me want to do good works and help others. Not because I have to, I don't think it is going to get me a higher place in Heaven, but I want to, because of the way it makes me feel inside. I volunteer in a homeless womens shelter and it is one of the best things I do. Making these women feel like there is hope and they can still follow their dreams has been very meaningful work for me. As women we always need to lift each other up.

I am sure I would not survive without my faith and the support it has given me. I go to church with a group of people who give every day and are teaching me how to do more. The times I have served have given me much more than I have ever given - I know I must do more and my faith will show me where and how to do this.
