Can you think of a barrier that women face in your community that keeps women or their children from education, income, or economic opportunities?

Melinda writes: "As soon as we began to spend more time understanding how people live their lives, we saw that so many of the barriers to advancement ... can be traced to the limits put on the lives of women." Can you think of a barrier that women face in your community that keeps women or their children from education, income, or economic opportunities?

The barriers faced in the community where I work are largely related to race, language, and socioeconomic status. Especially in the year of COVID, people are struggling to make connections in both senses of the word - technical access to internet connections and interpersonal connections to access the communities and services they need.

Where do women go when they have no back-up child care. They need to go to work but can't leave children alone. Providing community support in these situations would remove one barrier. Another barrier is lack of mentors and role models. Again, we need more community support. The epidemic has certainly slowed this down but with many retirees needing a purpose, we could help remove the barriers for women with no outside support.

Yes, education, education, education. We lack sufficient funding for our public schools.

Agree wholeheartedly with debra that education, or the lack of it, is a huge barrier particularly for women. I agree that there isn't enough funding for schools, but my bigger concern is that young people in this country (and/or their parents) don't appreciate or value education and what it can do to lift them up. So many girls in other parts of the world would give anything for the education that boys and girls in this country take for granted. So I guess what I see as a barrier is the lack of understanding how education is the key to overcoming so many other barriers.

I think culture can erect enormous barriers for women. In many families, it's not OK for women to work outside the home or for them to pursue an education. It can take tremendous courage and the willingness to leave one's family behind to overcome such barriers.

Suburban Iowa may seem idyllic, but who knows one's neighbor? Without knowing neighbors, even women who work outside the home are limited - they don't know their children's friends and may not really know their teachers; they don't know the people outside their immediate work environment who might help them.
