Melinda writes that "the most transforming force of education for women and girls is changing the self-image of the girl who goes to school." Did you have a teacher who helped change your self-image? How did he or she do it? What effect did it have on you?

You are going to hear this a lot....my mother and grandmother. These were women who had to take care of themselves in the 40's and 50's....they worked hard at jobs that were not considered women's work and while they would not have considered themselves feminists, that is exactly what they were. I learned from them....I was encouraged to do whatever I needed to make money and take care of myself. My family was poor, I was the first educated family and no one ever suggested that there was something I shouldn't or couldn't do because of gender or social or economic status. I learned to ask for help when I needed it. With Melinda Gates (and other women with her skills) a whole world of women will learn!

I wish I could say that there was a teacher that helped change my self-image, but really no one comes to mind. There were a number of teachers I liked, and those who helped form me, but there wasn't one that really initiated change.

I think it's important to note that some teachers can negatively impact people, too. There was the one teacher that told me I needed to do better because, after I'd moved to the suburbs from the inner-city, I was "with a lot of smart kids now." And the one who willfully looked the other way as I was bullied mercilessly. And don't get me started on my mother!

I had a male high school teacher who challenged me to do better. I worked really hard in order to live up to his expectations of me and even chose my career (as a ninth grader) because of his influence.

I appreciate the feedback. I purposefully focused the question on a teacher because education can either make or break us. There were several teachers for me along the way. As an adult, I was able to track down and thank the ones who formed me. Great feeling.

Yes multiple- Mr and Mrs Powell - he in Mechanical Drawing and her in Biology- always encouraging me to believe in myself. Or others that just communicated caring.

I had a speech and drama teacher in high school who took a Nervous Nellie of a girl and, with training, kind criticism, and encouragement, and persistence, turned her into a successful debater and competent public speaker. It made a huge difference in how confident I was and how I felt about myself generally.

Please, everyone, don't take this the wrong way, but I'd like to think that I was a teacher who helped change the self-images of young people. I spent nearly 30 years in the classroom from grades 1-8, often with low-achieving students who really needed the support of someone to "lift them up". Not an easy task, but sometimes they just needed an adult to listen to them and help them understand what talents they had and how to use those, which did not always happen as I grew up.

Mrs. Spurlock, my high school English teacher, helped me by loaning me books to read and then discussing them with me. In college, another favorite English professor encouraged me to think more broadly and he encouraged me to attend graduate school. Without both of them, I would not have had the courage!

Not my self image but a teacher who loved history so much and was so enthusiastic about it that she gave me the same love of history and I am in charge of a history book club to this day.
