What did you think of Malik?

Was the character Malik believable? As an eight or nine year old on his own how do you think he got his street smarts? What made him settle on LaLakshmi as his "Auntie-Boss?"

RE: What did you think of Malik?

I loved him! He was resourceful--something required at that age in a city where he was forced to fend for himself--and he was caring/loyal--not something you always see in a child that age, but since he was forced to "grow up" so early, it makes sense.

He and Lakshmi were close and learned from each other--an important part of an adult/child relationship that not many recognize.

I think he sensed that they had similar characteristics--resourceful, independent, caring.

I liked Malik and I wanted to know more about his family background and motivations. His character seems to come and go. Lakshmi seems to have genuine feelings and cares for him like a family member and not just a worker.

I liked him and would have liked to know more about his background. I identified with him as someone that also was forced to grow up early.

RE: What did you think of Malik?

Malik was a wonderful character, albeit older than his years. He made the most of his situation and endeared him to me the same way that he did to Lakshmi, becoming part of her created family. I also enjoyed the humor of his relationship with the Maharani's chef.

RE: What did you think of Malik?

Malik was one of my favorite characters. The relationship between him and Lakshmi demonstrates how important a mentor can be for a young person from a marginalized segment of the population. Like Lakshmi, Malik had a positive, can do attitude. His characteristics endeared him to others as well, creating opportunities for him that allowed him a better life. Lakshmi thought she was taking care of Malik, but he very often took care of her.

I so agree with you acstrine. He was one of my favorite characters as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the humorous relationship with the Maharani's chef. The relationship between Lakshmi and Malik was truly a symbiotic one: they both benefited.

RE: What did you think of Malik?

Malik is wise beyond his years, but I could believe in him because he has had to be street smart to survive. I like Malik.

RE: What did you think of Malik?

All hero's journeys have helpers and Malik was certainly one of Lakshmi's. I thought he was a good character in the book as he was wise enough to help yet young enough to be helped.

RE: What did you think of Malik?

Malik was a perfection addition to the characters of this story. He was so wise beyond his years and had learned to be so on the streets of the city.....not an easy school to graduate with honors from. His loyalty and love for his "Auntie Boss" was unquestioned and I found myself adoring this young, resilient and endearing young man and his exploits.

I liked him. He is very street smart and knew how to make money. He liked Lakshmi very much as she helped him by giving him jobs to do. He was very loyal to her.

I loved the character of Malik.
He was street smart because of his circumstances because quickly saw the value of cultivating a relations with Lakshmi.
Malik was bright and observant so was aware of situations and the need to be alert.

RE: What did you think of Malik?

I thought Malik was a great addition to the story. He let us see Lakshmi as a caring woman as she initially seemed distant and cold with her sister. He was wise, caring and loyal. I wanted to know where he went at night. I enjoyed the relationship he developed with the chef too,

RE: What did you think of Malik?

Malik was a ray of sunshine in Lakshimi's life, though she did not seem to appreciate that. Without Malik, Lakshimi's relationship with her sister, Radhi, would have been even more difficult than it was.

What a street smart and loyal friend he was! He always seemed much older than they portrayed him in the story.. I loved him and was thankful that Lakshmi and Rhada had a friend like him!

RE: What did you think of Malik?

I loved the character of Malik. He was a street urchin who knew how to use his wits to survive. He was clever and loyal with a noble heart. Living on the streets made Malik wise beyond his years. He was an expert in human nature.
