Do you think the vanished men deserved their fates? How do their crimes compare to each other?

None of the vanished men are particularly missed, and each presented a certain kind of danger to the community. How does Larry Crumbie's domestic abuse compare to Frankie Tender's callous seduction? To Terrell Stuckey's hate mongering and murder? Do you think these men deserved their fates?

RE: Do you think the vanished men ...

Actually, three cheers for the fate of the vanished men. I had a feeling that this would be the outcome and also suspected who had taken on this responsibility. However, although Frankie Tender was a real jerk (polite word) and was totally out of line, he did not necessarily deserve to be killed based on only his encounter with Bert; HOWEVER, that also is true only because someone intervened. I suspect that Frankie got away with his despicable behavior in other villages. Hmmmmm, maybe he did deserve the same fate as the other two creeps.

This is a difficult question to answer. In spite of wrongdoing, how does one find acceptable the murder of another.

The vanished men deserved punishment. Considering the time of history that this story took place I don't think any of the men would have faced severe punishment or jail sentences. It took years and years before women felt safe enough to go to authorities for husband/boyfriend abuse. Racial abuse is still happening and there are still many jerks like Frankie Tender who get away with the same type of behavior.

Punishment, definitely but not murder (unless for reasons of self-defense). However, I agree with Gigi3 - at this time in history it is likely none of the three would have received punishment to equal the crime, if be punished at all. Violet, a wife would have been considered property of the husband and his to deal with as he saw fit. Bert would have been “asking for it.” And likely the German POWS would have been “casualties” of war and the case swept under the rug with Stucky doing minimal time.

Morally I don’t think murdering the men was Tiny Junior’s right. However I was glad the men were gone and no longer hurting people who could not protect or stand up for themselves.

The vanished men certainly deserved severe punishment... but by the courts. However, feeble-minded Tiny Junior was loving and protective of those who were kind to him. He saved two women who needed his protection, as well as the remaining POWs who he saw as vulnerable to his uncle's murderous hatred. I was glad that the girls chose to protect Tiny and keep his secret.

This is tricky. Even though the reader can sympathize with why the men met their fate, I'm not one to say someone "deserves" to be murdered. I don't take on that responsibility in life. However, I can see how and why others would.

I don't know if they deserved to be murdered but Tiny was protecting the people that he loved and this was his way of helping his friends.

Had these men gone to court for their crimes given the time period they probably would not have received a just sentence and gone free. Tiny did not have the mental capacity to differentiate between what was wrong and acted spontaneously to protect the people he loved. No good would have been served by the girls revealing his secret and they protected his memory.

I agree with the other comments- I was glad to see all of them go, but murdering them I’m not so sure about. I do think Tiny’s heart was in the right place and he just thought he was righting a wrong and protecting people.

I agree with the other comments. All these men preyed upon those weaker than themselves and were a threat to the community. Most likely very little would have been done to them had they been involved in the legal system. Tiny righted wrongs and protected those weaker in his community. Tiny was also a vulnerable member of his community and he seemed to recognize that distinct threat these men posed. His actions, on a simplistic level , removed the threat and made the community safer. Tiny showed his courage and loyalty to his friends and his community and perhaps that’s a lesson for everyone.

In this country everyone is supposed innocent until proven guilty as charged but maybe swift justice isn't totally wrong. I am on the fence with this one
