Charlotte and Ruth. Charlotte will have the love of her adopted and biological child; however, she will not have the support of a male figure which is important in that time period. Ruth, on the other hand, who never expects much from life has Tom's love and respect from the wealthy who send their sons to her and Tom to teach them boxing.

Charlotte will be fine. Her brother will be dead within a couple of years and she'll inherit (as I don't think he followed through with the change of will as he had no need to having "won" by marrying her off). Even if he remains alive, she has established a life for herself - and seems to have sufficient income from either husband or brother for her needs - and has established a new dynamic with both of them where they will not walk over her again. In a time when most marriages between the wealthy were more for economic reasons than love, it would not have been that unusual for a husband and wife to live separate lives. Such a situation might have prevented her from moving in the "best" of society, but she had no desire to do so.

Tom and Ruth will be fine. They will find a way to teach boxing to people in the town and make money doing so. Charlotte will raise her husband's baby, giving her a new purpose in life. She will be much more independent and will not need anyone to care for her. Tom and Ruth will work with Harry and he will be the new boxing champion.

Ruth will be fine. She is a women who knows right from wrong. Her life with Tom and Jack will be complete while they continue their family business.
Charlotte and her friend Ruth will be close friends forever. I thought in the book for a minute that Henry and Charlotte may get together. I did not know their ages though.
Henry is a determine man. he has his goals set high.
