I think that Ruth and Charlotte a cut from the same cloth, just in very different settings. They are both realists regarding their situations and strive to better themselves at all cost, getting quite beat up along the way, but growing on many levels.

They have both been beaten down by circumstances and find kindred spirits with each other, despite their divergent backgrounds. Neither have had a "friend", and discover the friendship between women is very powerful.

I think Ruth and Charlotte are drawn to each other because they are both beaten down by life & circumstances. In boxing terminology, they are both the under dogs.

I think they were both victims trying to deal with what life has dealt them. They were both used by Dryer, and in some sense, they were both "helped" by Dryer.

They are drawn to each other because of their differences. One a strong woman who must find a way to survive and the other a weak woman who wants to learn to be strong.

RE: Why do you think Ruth and Charlotte are so drawn to each other?

They were seemingly opposite sides of a coin to each other, but they came to understand how similar they were. Ruth had preconceived notions about Charlotte due to her experience with upper class people. Charlotte was brought up to be a lady, but due to family tragedies and her brother's mistreatment of her, she had experienced being a victim. She was able to see beyond the outside layers of people and was more compassionate. Due to her victimization, Charlotte was intrigued and respectful of Ruth's strength, and it caused her to seek out that strength. In the end, Ruth and Charlotte derived strength from each other and their lives were changed for the better due to their friendship.

I pretty much agree with Bobbie7. Their situations are different, but they both have been dealt lives that leave them with few options. Also, neither of them have any good woman friends.

I think Charlotte admires Ruth's strength.

I think Ruth is a natural born teacher, and enjoys having someone to groom, both from a personality standpoint as well as the sporting aspect. I think Ruth saw the person Charlotte could become and enjoyed bringing out that part of her personality.

I also agree with the comments above, I also think that Charlotte sees that Ruth has some freedoms she doesn't and vice-versa. Not to mention, I think Charlotte has a strong nurturing side that no-one else in her life allows her to indulge.

On the surface Charlotte appears to have nothing in common with Ruth, but she recognizes and admires the confidence and fight that Ruth demonstrates in the ring. Ruth is drawn to Charlotte because of her kindness.
They are thrown together by circumstances.

Both of them were victims of their life and society. Their loneliness also drew them together and I think both were interested in the others life style.
