Is Cat's email bullying of Maya forgivable and/or understandable? Is Cat a bad person?

Cat appeared to be such a thoughtful and good-natured young woman, yet we learn that she was the one sending Maya the hateful and bullying emails that caused her such pain. It is even more discouraging to realize that Cat was perfectly nice to Maya's face, but that she was saying how much she hates her behind her back. Furthermore, we learn that Cat had engaged in similar behavior before. However, Cat is human and her father had left not only her family with Susie and Luke, but had now also left his second family. Are her angry actions forgivable in light of that, or are her actions unforgivable and even partly to blame for Maya's death?

Cat's actions are quite understandable for her age. The entire family dynamics is a mess and she is at such an impressionable age--doesn't really know where she stands with her mother or father. The bullying emails are not forgivable, but the reasons behind this bullying is understandable. Cat is not a bad young women--she wanted a happy family.

I can definitely see why Cat would indulge in the email bullying of Maya, especially given that she was once disciplined for bullying another child at school. I don't think she is a bad person though. Her motives were real, trying to get her old family life back.

I don't think bullying is ever understandable...trying to hurt someone else and being a coward are lousy qualities. Cat was young and her computer use was how kids bully today but she had a problem in the past and her parents dropped the ball. I think Cat did come to the realization that her actions may have caused Maya's suicide and certainly hurt her deeply so perhaps she learned and changed. If she did understand and not bully in the future then it's forgivable but if it continues...bad person, messed up but still responsible for her own actions as an adult.

I agree that bullying is not forgivable. Cat did have emotional problems herself: overeating, as well as the previous bullying. She appears nice, but remember she was the older daughter and as such was called on to care for younger family members at times and probably felt she was being used. She was also at an age when her life would change and suddenly here was a younger woman with her dad. I must say I was not surprised that she was the bullier
