How did you respond to the buffalo hunt and Margie's choice to participate? What did you imagine would be the long-term effects of the hunt on Margie? On Bill? Did you think they would continue the tradition in subsequent years?

I live in the Pacific Northwest where over the years there have been many news items about the Native Americans wanting, and having, their treaty rights to whale hunting restored to them. Like the Crow who feel the same way about their right to hunt the buffalo, the whale hunts cause conflicting emotions for me. Both the buffalo and the whale are beautiful, powerful animals whom I believe deserve protection from human predators. However, given that they at one time were the source of life giving food, clothing, religious emblems for the native peoples, I also believe that small, controlled hunting of them is the right of those native peoples. As bonnieb says, the buffalo hunt was done with respect and honor for the animal and that is as it should be and as it also is during the whale hunt. For those of us from a different culture, it is somewhat difficult to understand that this is not simply another "deer hunt" for example, but a religious rite as well as finding sustenance for the hunters.
