Margie's father seems to be emotionally absent and drinking all the time. Simon appears to be looking for a woman to take care of his daughter and is more concerned with his causes than fatherhood. Jim, however, is an active and participating father despite his long work hours.

I agree with Bonnie. It's interesting that not only are they single fathers but they have single children which helps, I think, to emphasize their differences. Margie's dad and Simon cannot get over their grief at losing their wives which makes them both emotionally dry. Simon is so much more available because he has learned to cope and he isn't isolated like the other two. But they all love their daughters

Both Margie's dad and Simon are so caught up in their own grief that they are not there emotionally for their daughters. I was surprised as I think Margie was too, when she discovered the scrap book her dad had made documenting all her childhood milestones. It made me see his love for her where previously I had not. Simon was just a flake. I really never felt he had any redeeming qualities. Jim worked hard but always made time to let Cora know he loved her.
