How do Iles's novels compare with Robert Penn Warren's All The King's Men?

Both The Bone Tree and Natchez Burning begin with a quote from Robert Penn Warren's All the King's Men. How do Iles's novels compare with that classic of Southern politics and justice?

I have not read that book but this quote entices me to do so!

Robert Penn Warren's ALL THE KING'S MEN is a classic and one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read. It is so much more than a book about politics--it's about greed, corruption, guilt, soul-searching, sin, redemption, etc. What it has to say is relevant today, tomorrow, and in the future. I would recommend reading even re-reading it during this political season that is upon us. Illes revisits some of the same themes and setting in both NATCHEZ BURNING and THE BONE TREE.

There is a definite likeness between Penn Warren's KING'S MEN and Iles's BONE TREE and NATCHEZ BURNING. Clearly, Iles wants readers to think about this, too. One can not study American history and Southern history, in particular, without seeing stories of politics, disenfranchisement, and cover-ups. A better comparison might be actual news stories during the Civil Rights era and slight before.

Oh such a likeness! That was very clear to me when I read Iles description of the funeral service, probably one of the most moving passages I have read by a southern writer in a very very long time.

Very reminiscent and not a bad thing.
