Are there any other books on immigration that you'd recommend, and if so, what did you like about them? How did they compare to The Beekeeper of Aleppo? Are there authors whose writing style you find similar to Lefteri's?

I found myself comparing the refugee experience here to that described in American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins, which I have also read recently. There are some interesting parallels, and the traumatic stress of the experience is one of them.

I agree, American Dirt was a great read and made me realize how horrible it is to be a refugee. Both books showed the evil side of people but we also saw how very kind others could be.

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins is similar. Both heart wrenching stories of immigrants.

Little Bee is an excellent refugee book, and also The Kite Runner ... although I think this author definitely has her own writing style

I would recommend American Dirt and I feel that they are interesting books to compare. In both books I was horrified by the evil behavior of people, especially of people in power. I was also touched by what a difference small kindnesses can make to a person’s journey.

I agree with American Dirt, which I just finished yesterday, and I kept thinking of Beekeeper while I read it. Another author I might suggest whose works have dealt with immigration (albeit largely legal immigration) is Jhumpa Lahiri, where you see the effects and changes over a longer period of time, not just the actual crossing the border experience.

Some of the books I have listed are not 100% immigration stories, but all definitely involve the displacement of people from one place to another, often as an escape from one life for something better.

The Girl with the Louding Voice Abi Daré
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous Ocean Vuong
The Henna Artist Alka Joshi
Lost Children Archive Valerie Luiselli
American Dirt Jeanine Cummins
Girls Burn Brighter (trafficking)
Distance Between Us Reyna Grande
Devil's Highway Luis Urrea
Book of Unknown Americans Cristina Henríquez
The Affairs of the Falcóns Melissa Rivero

What I liked about The Beekeeper of Aleppo was the way the author used the memories of the beehives and the promise of new beehives as a way of providing some calm into a very turbulent, difficult story. Nuri was able to meditate and relax by thinking of the fields of flowers and the bees buzzing. This gave me an opportunity to take a deep breath and center myself as well before continuing. i found the lyrical writing of Ocean Vuong to have a similar effect on me as I read his book.
