Jack and Dylan, though initially unsure about Jane, don't take too long to accept her into their family, both before and after Kate gets better. Were you ever faced as a child, or even a young adult, with accepting a new family member into your life? How did you feel about your parents dating someone new? Was it difficult for you to accept?

My father’s first wife died and they had had no children. Still, I was uncomfortable with the idea that he had loved someone before my mother and probably still loved her. I can totally understand the boys’ initial reaction. I can also sympathize with their being uncomfortable thinking about their parents as sexual beings. That’s pretty universal.

My parents divorced when I was already married. One is remarried, the other isn't. Still, they both dated other people. My take was that it really wasn't my business as to whether I approved or not. They are both adults who have the right to determine what they want out of life, and I see my role in their lives as being supportive of those decisions. Of course, that might be difficult if I did not approve of their decisions post divorce, but that isn't the case.

My brother and I only recently met the woman my father was dating, but it probably was that I lived away from the home town. Then there was the question as to what the woman wanted. It did not last and I admit I was glad.
