Hubert's understanding that his daughter was coming to visit him motivated him to realize that he needed to get some friends. Ashleigh's nudge to pull him into a social project was the instrument got him there.
I am part of a group of people who have adopted a homeless shelter one day a month, every other month. We muster our resources and provide a full meal for 30+ homeless at one of the local shelter. There is joy in knowing that you can help in any small way.

I suppose it was Ashleigh's presence. She'd appeared at his door and he'd run into her at the vet's just before Rose's announcement that she was coming to visit. I can't think of anything else that had changed in his environment that might have prompted his move toward making more friends.

I think Hubert needed to be needed...by Ashleigh and her daughter. It gave him a sense of purpose and brought him out into the world away from his cat and his made-up notebook life. He needed a push and she agave it to him. I can only imagine how many people have remained in isolation after the pandemic because they aren't sure how to get back out there among people and socialize. We need more Ashleighs in the world!

Rose's visit spurred him into finding friends since he had been lying to her. Then Ashleigh's persistence made it easier to take that first step.

Being a strong introvert, I do not particularly enjoy social events. But occasionally I will attend one that actually turned out to be fun.

Layla was the key to nudge Hubert back into the world. Children are pure love, living in the moment and only wanting our attention and presence. This innocent love healed something in Hubert, allowing his spirit to awaken to the world around him. Ashley's continual invitations created an opportunity for him to reconnect fully.

Knowing Rose was coming for a visit and his desire to make friends to replace the fictional ones he had been telling Rose about that brought him out of his shell. Ashleigh’s appearance on the scene and her exuberance for life definitely helped.

I think it was Ashleigh's persistence in getting him to interact with her and Layla...having her babysit Layla was brilliant.

RE: What nudged Hubert to leave his ...

I think Hubert was tired of being lonely. To me, his pretend conversations were him attempting to figure out how to make himself more available to others. He must have read about the 0-60 Club and been trying to think of how he could be more social. Then, Ashleigh appeared and helped him connect with others.
