Joyce stood up against racism to be with Hubert even though things in her life may have been easier without Hubert in it. What does that tell you about who Joyce is as a person and her values in life?

In a very clear way, it tells me that Joyce is a woman of high standards and morals, and one who is strong. She knows what she may be sacrificing but knows in her heart it's the right decision.

RE: Joyce stood up against racism to be ...

I was amazed at the courage Joyce displayed in this story. She was so lucky to fall in love with Hubert as they really did have an amazing love story, however she lost her family as a result of her relationship with him. At first I thought she displayed amazing maturity by picking Hubert over her family; but as I thought about this more I'm wondering if her decisions were more driven by anger and frustration that her family didn't see Hubert the same way she did??? As the story unfolds and Joyce also sees racist actions involving her children, her true grit comes out as she is a role model for how everyone should treat others.

Joyce was a strong woman who ultimately followed her heart. I felt she had genuinely fell in love with him and had to reconcile how she was raised with her feelings for Hubert. In the end, she chose her future with him over her past.

Joyce had the capacity to not judge a book by its cover, so to speak. She had the discernment to judge character and personality, to take the time to understand a person, and fell in love with what she saw and understood. I know mixed race couples who met resistance based on prejudices embedded in some parts of society. Sometimes with persistence and as the rejecting parties begin to really know the other, that resistance weakens. It is not an easy road to go down. When they visited Haiti, they had no resistance. In the United States, however, there is a risk of not just one side but both wanting to disown the couple.

Joyce's strength about her love for Hubert was a very touching part of the book. I felt she gave up alot to marry Hubert, but her love sustained her. Hubert and Joyce seemed devoted to each other. The racism they encountered was very hurtful and extended to their children.

Joyce was a strong person who followed her heart, despite the discrimination toward the couple. One had to admire her because the story begins in a time when mixed-race couples were definitely put down. She was also willing to lose contact with her own family to be with Hubert.

I thought Joyce was a remarkable person. She fell in love with Hubert and stood firm in her choice to be with him, regardless of the hardships his race threw at them. I'm sure it was devastating to lose her family, but she carried on and built a family with Hubert. She was strong and determined

Joyce had a lot of courage and loved Hubert more than anything. We need more Joyce's in this current world.

Joyce was an independent thinker, strong enough to stand up to prejudice in the workplace, and that of her family. She loved Hubert above all else.

Joyce made a very difficult decision in a time of extreme racism and never looked back. I was impressed with her dedication to Hubert and her new family and the way she surrounded them with love.
