Is there one character that you felt dealt with their own tragedies better than the others? If you wish, share a time when you felt like giving up, but your friends and family helped you find your joy again.

Each of the characters experiences joys and sorrows in their lives. Is there one that you felt dealt with their own tragedies better than the others?

If you wish, share a time when you felt like giving up, but your friends and family helped you find your joy again.

RE: Is there one character that you felt...

I think that Ashleigh faced reality, sized it up, developed a plan, and made it happen. She asked for what she needed in an upfront, honest way, with a hopeful and positive approach, and she got it. She was willing to do the hard work and seemed to spend little time on self pity or reproach. Her drive was to provide for herself and her daughter. This was a big task that she accomplished and did a lot of other good in the process. She is is the deal "with their own tragedies better" star!

I think women in general are better at dealing with tragedies, and this book showed that. Joyce, Jan, Ashleigh, and Hubert's mother all faced challenges and overcame them. It seems like the men - Hubert and Gus - just shut down & isolated themselves.

I felt like Hubert did the best job of dealing with tragedy. Leaving his home country to find work was difficult. He could not afford to return home frequently to visit. However, he held his head up and kept pursuing better work to build a good life in England for his family. He kept going once his son developed a substance abuse problem, continuing to build a business and generating enough income to send him for several rounds of rehab. He was steadfast and kind to Joyce through her battle with dementia. He encouraged Rose to return to her career, even though this left him alone and grieving. Rose's death was the final blow, but even then, he told himself a story that she was just "away" so that he could endure the pain he felt. The strength he received from opening up first to Ashley and then the others, rebuilt his strength until he could once again move forward.

I felt Joyce dealt with the tragedy of her son by continuing to love and care for Hubert. Drugs and other tragedies put such strain on a marriage, but Joyce's love for Hubert was strong enough to survive.

Ashley was open to broadening her world so I think she coped the best. She didn't seclude herself, but reached out. By reaching out, she helped others, especially Hubert.

I agree with those who rated Ashleigh as the character best able to deal with the tragedies in her life. She moved with her Layla to a new home, found help when she needed it, and saw beyond her own troubles to those of others. She also made the time to invest in improvements to their lives.

I think it was Ashleigh. She recognized loneliness and wanted to do something to fix it.

I think Ashleigh did the best job of coping. She took risks, made bold moves, and persisted. Instead of turning inward and dwelling on her hardships, she turned outward and looked for a solution and for others to help. I’m sure that having Layla was a motivating factor as well as her youth and the possibility of many years of life ahead of her.

Ashleigh is the poster child of resilience! I loved her ‘can do’ attitude. I think she was motivated by trying to provide a positive role model for her daughter and in doing so she gathered many positive role models who clearly loved her daughter.

I loved Joyce! What a tragedy to have your family reject you, basically disown you and pretend you don’t exist because you fell in love with someone with a different skin color.
