Did you find parallels between Bo's relationship with his father and Isla's relationship with her mother, and if so, what were they?

They were both absent. Bo's father who died when he was young at sea and Isla's mother was physically present but distant, preoccupied, detached and not engaged with her children. Isla's mother is left mysterious, one must intuit the hurts she bears from her presumably abusive former spouse, the children's father.

The parallels that I see are related to separation. Bo's relationship with his father was brief, in childhood, separating them permanently or physically by death. Bo continues to try to keep an emotional connection by "following in his father's footsteps". Isla's relationship with her mother is still current, separating them emotionally at this point not physically or permanently. One would hope that the emotional connection returns or strengthens between mother and daughter.
