Eva reflects that the younger librarian she works with underestimates her, as does her son. Who else do you think underestimates her in the book? Have you felt there are those who’ve underestimated you? If so, who, and in what ways?

Her mother & Joseph definitely underestimated Eva. I personally got mixed messages growing up & on into adulthood as to my abilities- mostly the message was “you are not capable to ___ (fill in the blank) I was often called “a rebel” when I went after what I wanted - the go-to saying for my family is: “that’s the craziest thing I ever heard.”

Mamusia definitely underestimated and worse, didn't acknowledge or appreciate Eva's efforts and sacrifices. Also, Eva also underestimated her own capabilities at times, but fortunately and remarkably, didn't allow the doubt to keep her from taking action (for example, moving her mother and herself out of Paris, forging documents and exploring new ways to produce documents more efficiently, taking a frontline role and helping move the children as a family). As for the librarian and son later in Eva's life...not a surprise - the young often underestimate the contributions of their elders.

I agree completely with Gabi, however, her mother overestimated Eva’s ability to obtain her father’s release from Drancy, which caused much sorrow for Eva. Joseph also underestimated Eva’s abilities, her moral compass, and her contacts.

Her mother was definitely underestimates her. She was so ungrateful,
Eva's moving her and mother out of Paris, was not appreciated by her cranky mother. There were times I don't think I could have been as pleasant as Eva with my responses.
