Eva believed that Rémy went to his grave not knowing how she felt about him because she told him she couldn't marry him. Do you think Rémy ever thought that Eva had given up on him when he waited for her on the library steps and she never showed? If they had ended up finding each other before they both moved on to live separate lives, do you think they would have made it as a couple? Why or why not?

Remy knew - yes, they would have made it “happily ever after”.

RE: Eva believed that Rémy went ...

I'm sure Remy had doubts when Eva didn't show up. Especially since she'd told him she couldn't marry him. However, he may have also thought she had died before the war ended. I do think they would have made it if they'd been reunited after the war. Eva's parents were dead so she shouldn't have felt guilt or betrayal to her parents for marrying someone not jewish. They would have to work out their interfaith marriage, but I believe they could have done it.

They did meet again in Berlin, "The Book of Lost Names" having brought them back together...and this time I believe it was forever.

Yes....I think they would have stayed together and been extremely happy. I think they would have gotten together and stayed together because going through an experience like they did had to make their bond very strong.

I believe if she had known Remy were still alive, she never would have married.

I think Remy thought she had passed away too or perhaps changed her mind about marrying him, so he kept coming back to see if she would show up on the steps.

I don't think Remy and Eva ever gave up on each other even though they had to go forward with their lives. If they had met after the war, I think they would have had a lovely life together. And now, thanks to the Book of Lost Names, they have that chance.

Hypotheticals are a true waste of time. No one knows what will happen, only what happened. Eva's life was a good one surrounded by books for comfort. Again, we live the life we have in front of us.

I think Remy had given up on ever knowing what had happened to Eva. I do think they could have lived happily ever after if they had reunited on the library stairs. I think that because I wanted it for them. They had given enough of themselves already, and I wanted them to be happy together.

Based on the ending of the book, I think they would definitely live "happily ever after".

I like to think that they would have had a good life together. At the end, I couldn’t help wondering if Remy had ever married and if he had children. It seemed that he was single at the end of the book. If so, that was certainly a stroke of good luck.
