How did Eva's love of books help her at different points? What were some of your favorite books as a child? When did you first realize the power of books? What book made you fall in love with reading?

On page 165, Eva says, "I've always thought that it's those children—the ones who realize that books are magic—who will have the brightest lives." How did Eva's love of books help her throughout different points in the story? What were some of your favorite books as a child? When did you first realize the power of books? What book made you fall in love with reading? Do you think your life would be different if you hadn't found the joy of reading?

RE: How did Eva's love of books ...

We meet Eva in an American library— in a place she loves. Before her family's life is destroyed in France, she finds joy through books. She does forgeries surrounded by books. She always found comfort in books, plus she retained the escaped children's edentates in a book. "Books felt like home to her." (Quote, Page 74) My mother read to me nightly as a child, and as I learned to read, I read to her. Books gave me a feeling of "love." My first childhood favorites were Raggedy Ann books. Later— Charlotte's Web; The Lion, the Witch, and the Wordrobe; The Wizard of Oz; etc. I loved them all! Reading takes me to a different world and I would be devastated without it.

It is books like this one that fuel my love for reading and I think it was the same for Eva. Books she remembered, cherished, and allowed her to escape. As a child, I loved Make Way for Ducklings and the Nancy Drew mysteries.

Eva’s wise father shared his love of books and reading with Eva. Books helped Eva develop moral courage, which guided her in difficult situations and led to heroic actions.
My own love of reading began in childhood with books like The Narnia Chronicles and A Wrinkle in Time, all of which I read and re-read. Reading continues to deepen my understanding and empathy for others.

RE: How did Eva's love of books ...

Books surrounded Eva all her life. They provided her comfort and escape - "I wonder if I would have survived without the escape their pages offered me from reality" (page 80). They provided her with a means of communication with Remy and a way to archive the children's names. The book-filled room in the church offered her sanctuary and a place to make a difference. In the bookshop in Aurignon, she found kindness and an ally in the owner. The libraries in Paris and later in life were a means of employment in the world she loved. And in the books themselves, Eva found "magic. Books change the world."

Make Way for Ducklings! I haven't thought of that book in years and it was a favorite. Also Madeleine stories and Highlights Magazine back at the very beginning. Then onto Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden and The Bobbsey Twins.

RE: How did Eva's love of books ...

I have loved books and books on records (which dates me - lol)/ audiotapes/CDs/digital for as long as I can remember. Some of my early favorites included Charlotte’s Web, Enid Blyton’s series (British), The Wheel on the School (Meinard deJong), Nancy Drew series, Anne of Green Gables Series..and the list goes on. I am so thankful for my Mom and my first grade teacher who cultivated this passion for reading in me. Like Eva...for me, books are magic. They have fanned my curiosity, opened doors, provided solace and answers, entertained, taught life lessons, and bought lots of laughter and smiles. I can’t imagine life without them.
