RE: What does the selflessness present ...

I believe humans are basically good, kind of heart, willing to help & support those in need. When fear overwhelms a person they can change. I have no clue why one pushes past the fear & steps up to the challenge of “humanities” & others choose a hardened heart but our histories show this can often happen.
Crisis brings out the extremes but I believe people bond in a crisis & work for the good. Yes, I definitely see the capacity for good & kindness today.

On any given day, I believe there are more good things happening in the world than bad and more kindness than cruelty. But it always amazes me when people decide to put their own safety aside in order to help others. To decide to put your own life on the line to help others is something that I don't know if I could do. I hope so, but I just don't know. But I certainly admire and look up to those who do.

RE: What does the selflessness present ...

Even in this day of the 'me generation', we see many acts of selflessness and concern for others. Caring is what humans do best and the majority of humans truly worry for their neighbors and fellow citizens. What is seen in the media is such a tiny sample of what occurs everyday; it is easy to get cynical.

I do believe that human beings are capable of much goodness. But I also think in times of strife, war, disease, that fear plays a larger role than ever. Survival becomes the central focus and people forget basic qualities for helping fellow man. We don't need to look very far to see how this has played out in our own country and the world.

I should add, that its the selfless people who stand out the most. We should consider the bravery of those who put others first. That was what made the book interesting. Those characters are the ones we remember, not the cruel or selfish ones.
