How did the panels with no text impact the story's pace?

Many panels contain no text. How did these pages impact the story's pace?

Some say it speeds up the novel, but I also found that I spent time thinking more in depth as well, what was the artist/author trying to convey in the details of his drawings, etc.

I agree with Lynn, this was a "quicker" read because of the drawings with no words, but it also was really unique to study and see what the author had chosen to share. I found myself looking at small details and it really brought the story to life!

I also think that while the drawings without words made the reading faster (i.e., it didn't feel like a "long" book), it also inserted pauses in the action - kind of like taking a breath. I felt it interrupted the momentum just a bit, forcing me to contemplate what's happened before the action kicked back in.

I believe the panels with no text could be compared to a movie when action with dialog is suspended and we learn by just watching continuing scenes before dialog picks up again. I also think the pace would be determined by the reader--spending time analyzing the pictures--or not. I reread the book because I felt I hadn't caught enough story to make much sense the first time.

I feel reading this graphic novel was very much like watching a silent film. The panels without words are the action screens that move the story along.
