RE: Loss

Laura states that she lost her son twice. In the first experience, she takes a whole book to describe her heart break. The second time she tells of that devastating loss of Richard once more in a few sentences. What was your reaction to her news?

RE: Loss

A loss of this magnitude would leave most people without words.the first loss alone leaves forever memories of pain. Laura’s second loss, while no doubt as painful, will also leave a much sweeter memory of love reunited.

It was sad that she didn't have him longer, but as she states, she had wonderful memories of their reunion and grandchildren.

Tragic obviously. The second loss could possibly have been softened by the few memories she had after she first found him.

I was so sad for her. No mother should lose her child once, never mind twice.

I was shocked to hear that he had killed himself. How heartbreaking for her to lose him yet again. I can’t even begin to imagine how Laura can recover from that.

I felt very sorry for Laura. She was forced to give up her baby, and when they are united when he is an adult, only for him to take his own life. Yes, she did lose him twice.

That was pitiful. They had so little time together. The fact that he took his own life was especially sad. We also do not know his total feelings like- why take his life? Did it have anything to do with Laura?

My first response was shock, then sorrow for them both. For Richard, because his depression couldn’t overcome the times of joy with his families, and for Laura because this second loss must have felt unbearable. A further heartbreak in a story of heartbreaks.

I was sad for her that she lost him for so long. I was happy that they finally reunited.I was so sad that she lost him again so soon from suicide. I’m glad she got to meet him and spend some time getting to know him and his family.

I knew something was going to happen to Laura's son in the end but it was still a shock to find out he had taken his own life. She mentions him being depressed, but doesn't really say why. At least they had a few good years together.

I was devastated and reread that part several times to make sure I had read it correctly. At least she had the opportunity to meet him and his family.

When I read the epilogue I literally gasped out loud. I absolutely didn't see this coming. My heart goes out to Laura for being brave enough to share her story which is in no way diminished by her son's suicide. I liked the acknowledgments that she made at the end. It provided insight into and appreciation of the people in her life that provide meaningful support for her.

The first time was a terrible loss, she went years without knowing what happened to him. The second time she knew he had a family and had a good life. That would have given her some peace. I would, however, felt this somehow was partly my fault.

To me, lising her son a second time was a cruel twist of fate.
