Throughout the book, multiple characters reference and find comfort in Shakespeare's The Tempest. If you've read The Tempest or seen the play, why do you think the author chose this work in particular? What connections and common themes do you feel it shares with The Exiles?

Shakespeare's words give voice to universal ideas, events and human relationships and do so beautifully.

The Tempest is about a conjured storm and castaways on an uninhabited island. Its themes are freedom, confinement, betrayal, compassion, and love, which are also themes in The Exiles.

I found a succinct summary of The tempest that described it as "a very mixed mood story, it involves love, revenge, anger, passion and forgiveness." I think these also describe The Exiles.

I am not familiar with The Tempest. Have to Wikipedia it to see what the connections are, but from the posts above, it sounds like the major themes are very similar.

The title says it all "The Tempest." The Exiles is all about strong emotions: anger, despair, violence, and revenge.

I had to get a copy of "The Tempest" and read it to figure out why it was so important to the story and I'm glad I did.

The themes of the Tempest mesh so well with those of The Exile. Privation, terror, forces of nature, fear of the unknown, darkness and light, survival, and those unknown to others, such as the native Caliban, echo throughout The Exile.

All of the exiled persons are living in tempests. This is not a calm, peaceful story: there are major disturbances--the lives of the exiled are full of disruptions.

Although I had read "The Tempest" many years ago, I have now re-read it. The play is so wondrous: it ties in beautifully with the uprooted lives of those sent in exile.

The Exiles is an especially great book. I'm glad to have read it.

Shakespeare's The Tempest was a story about a storm. A storm raged within all the characters in The Exiles. # 1 - the characters had to survive a storm, # 2 - They were sent into exile, # 3 - Some sought revenge, # 4 - In the end they survived and found love.
