At Newgate Prison, Evangeline is told, "[T]here's no man you can count on. No woman neither. The sooner you understand that, the better off you'll be." Do you think this is true for Evangeline? Is it true in general?

No, I think she could count on Mrs. Fry and the Quakers, on Dr. Dunn to some extent, and on Olive and Hazel.
We all need other people and hopefully we find some we can count on.

The Author provided several people Evangeline could count on in the ship-board setting and as it turned out beyond her own knowing.
Personally I think you must first define what it means to "count on". If you mean find someone who will solve all your problems, no. If you mean find someone who will help you find the inner strength to solve your problems, yes.

Thinking you have no one to count on but yourself could make you stronger. And Evangeline certainly needed to be strong, for herself and for her child. Fortunately, it turned out not to be true. There were people she could count on.

Although I agree that people need to count on themselves first (and not rely on others to “rescue” them) I also feel that people have a richer life when there is mutual support. Evangeline ended up with several people on board the ship she could count on but it was interesting that the more confident she became, the more connections she made.

No, I do not agree. She did have a support group. One cannot always rely solely on oneself; a person has to allow others to come into his/her life to complete the circle of relationships--good and bad.

There are many people I count on and I think it would be a very lonely world if you only counted on yourself. Yes, you can be very disappointed in people but friendships and relationships are what molds us into the people we become.

I agree with with Bay Park Reader about not looking to others to solve your problems but accepting help from others can broaden your support network.
Evangeline was doing her best to handle her life situation, but did accept help when offered and was just as eager to offer assistance when she saw a need. I also agree with Candacef about friendships and relationships molding us into who we become. I hate to think of what I would have missed out on without my friends over the years.

Evangeline was a strong woman and knew she could not depend on others. Certainly not a man. She did have a shared relationship with people she met and they mutually supported each other.

It is true , to a point, you have to take care of yourself. If there are others who give you support, great...
