RE: Which character did you relate to ...

I related to Carmen as she reminded me of people I know. Carmen is so worried about appearances and what other people think that she missed the abuse of her daughter in her own home. Carmen's early life was brutal and when she escaped Cuba she forgot the good of her mother's love with the death of her father. It takes Carmen a lifetime and much loss to realize that connections with people should be based on love, hopefully with Ana she will be able to forge a family.
I think every character was very relatable and believable.

Part of the difficulty in reading this book is that no character was empathetical.

Dolores. I come from a very strong group of women. They are and were all smart, resourceful and resilient. I thought Dolores was magnificent. She tried to find a way out for herself and her girls and she did what she had to do. She took a terrible risk but she endured and persevered and emerged and even though Carmen thought she was a terrible murderer, she did it all to survive and protect her girls. That woman was steel in her core. She wrote her own story and refused to allow a man dictate her or her girls’ future

I wouldn’t say I related to any of the characters. However, I could empathize with their struggles and the choices they made as women.

Fortunately I have not been involved in a relationship that has been that abusive where I could actually relate to the characters or their struggles. I agree that I empathize with them.

I thought long and hard about this question and I can honestly say I did not related to any of the woman in this book. Part of it was again the way the book moved thru time and just when I was beginning to relate to a character the story moved on. I felt the only character that was stable throughout the book was Jeanette and I really did not relate well to her.
