The deportation of Gloria provides for the connection between Ana and Jeannette's families since Jeannette takes in Ana for a short while. The story comes full circle when Ana connects with Carmen, Jeeannette's mother, at the end.

I agree with Marcie, that the incident links the two families. The brief time that Jeannette takes care of Ana becomes an unselfish act in Jeannette's life of questionable choices.

Jeanette babysits Ana for a short period when Gloria is deported. One of the very few charitable unselfish things Jeanette does. But it is enough to join their two families over time.
