What parallels can you draw between the hate group, the Double Eagles, and other modern terrorist groups? What is the Double Eagles' ultimate purpose, and how and why does the Cage family come in conflict with them in the novel?

These groups seem to have no moral center regarding human life. They blindly follow a warped ideology which isn’t affected by reason, history, or current events. Their hallmarks are savagery and obedience to leaders who require unquestioning loyalty driven by fear and hate.

They all harbor unreasonable hatred towards people who share different beliefs or even look different. They don’t seem to be able to understand and tolerate differences in others, whether it’s culture, skin color, religion, sexuality, etc.

Low tolerance for uncertainty or ambiguity - people involved in hate groups (Double Eagles or modern terrorist groups) tend to see things as "black and white" rather areas of "gray". While individuals within the Double Eagles or terrorist organizations may not have been violent people when they get involved with these groups and surround themselves with other extremists advocating violence then group think takes over and violence often seems to make more sense since it's for the group's safety or future.

Not exactly a response to the question but perhaps only because Ihave never personally had to deal with people like the double eagles I found their unremittingly evil behavior hard to believe. While all of us have some elements o violence and evil in our characters, it is generally true that even the evil people have something redeeming in their behavior/lives.

They all seem to be the same- arrogant, self important, white supremacists who want to destroy and oppress the non-white population by any method. Violence is one of their ways of achieving their objective.

The Double Eagles are no different than ISIS or ANTIFA or MS13 or Nazis...groups looking for scapegoats to affirm their own feelings of supremacy. Intolerant of change. They have to dehumanize their targets be they westerners, Jews, people of color, other gangs, people with different political ideology....blindly following a charismatic leader, finding protection & affirmation in the group think.

It seems that this kind of hate does not change through time. It's based on ignorance and an unwillingness to change. It seems like its easier to hate someone for their skin color/religion/gender/sexuality, you name it, and blame them for the "ills of society". I am always shocked with the vehemence that a person can hate. It must be crushing to carry that kind of emotion around with you all the time. It blinds you to any other way of thinking. Its what fundamentally makes all hate groups the same.

RE: What is the Double Eagles’ ultimate purpose, and how and why does the Cage family come in conflict with them in the novel?
The Double Eagles, a small local racist group that broke away from of the KKK in the 1960s, were more violent than the original KKKs. They organized as a means to attack Blacks and those they deemed enemies of their racial animosity.
Dr. Cage’s former nurse and lover, Violet, returns to Natchez to die. The Double Eagles want to quickly dispose of her and the knowledge she has about their many racial crimes. Dr. Cage reaches out to Violet to give her a peaceful death. But in doing so, he is accused of brutally killing her and goes to trial for his alleged participation. His family through all this, learns many secrets and past lies regarding the involvement of Dr. Cage, the Double Eagles and ongoing racial difficulties. And so, the Cages are continuing their conflict with the Double Eagles.
