The book's dealings with LGBTQ issues are very relevant to today's world. Many characters in the book are members of the LGBTQ community as well, including Jeremy, Sam, Paul, Mark, and Bobby. Do you think that having so many members of the LGBTQ community close to her in her life affected Lee's decision to take the case? Do you think it affected how she tried it? Is there anyone in your life that affected the way you read and reacted to the case?

In some ways I'm sure Lee's connection to the LGBTQ community did influence her to take the case. Even as professional as Lee was, how could her personal life, if even a minor way, not affect how she tried the case?
I have known a few people in my life that were gay and I try my best not to feel or act in any way prejudicial towards anyone based on race, religion or sexual preference. With that in mind, we all still have prejudices whether we like to admit it or not. As I read the book, I had to put those aside and really hear what the story had to say.

I believe that Lee understood the LBGTQ community. That made her not just a good lawyer for Jeremy but a better lawyer.

I have gay friends and they are no different than any other I have. I don't tend to see those differences as others do.

I don't think that affected Lee's decisions. I feel that Lee understood the LGBTQ community, but she would have ultimately done what was right for her client.

Peggy hired Lee because she was the best defense attorney, not because she had been married to a bisexual or had best friends who were gay. When Lee decided to take the case, she didn't even think about how it would affect her relationships with Mark and Bobby, who might not be too happy she was defending a young man who had confessed to taking part in the murder of a gay man. In fact, one Saturday at dinner, Lee even called the two men out on their reaction to her taking the case. "Where the hell have you been for the past fifteen years? And, now that I think about it, where was your horror when the victims were women and children?" I got the impression that Lee was too much of a professional and incredibly aware of what her oath required of her to be affected by those around her.

While the murder of Sam was absolutely horrifying, I found myself reacting more harshly toward Jeremy's parents. A very close friend of mine had a terrible experience with her church after her son came out. I guess I'm not as surprised that a bunch of skinheads are capable of murder as I am about two parents who call themselves Christians and then turn against their only child at a time he needs them the most- -the love thy neighbor thing- -God didn't say your straight neighbor.

Quite the contrary, I think in some ways her knowledge of the community made her more inclined to take the case. Her friends Mark and Bobby tried to dissuade her and reminded her of the protests and vigils associated with the case. I loved her retort (stated above by acstrine) about where was the horror when the victims were women and children and found it highly appropriate.

I also agree that the parents' decision to throw a 16 year old child out on the street was unfathomable to me as well. How could you turn away from an otherwise "model" child? What kind of parent does that?
