Which character do you consider yourself to be most like? Did you have a favorite character? A least favorite?

The book has an abundance of relatable, authentic characters. Which character do you consider yourself to be most like? The calm, dedicated Lee? The quirky, accomplished Carla? The adventurous Mark and Bobby? Did you have a favorite character? A least favorite?

Lee was most like me, facing the fact that she maybe cannot do everything to the extent that she could in the past. Like Lee, my job working with special needs youth demanded a clear head, dedication, passion, and a lot of patience. However, my favorite character was Carla. She was somewhat of a mess in her personal life but professionally she was awesome.

I think that Lee and I had most in common. And that Jeremy and I had the least in common. I tend to be strong, and thoughtful developing my own opinions, like Lee. I saw Jeremy as weak, manipulated and having trouble just surviving another day. I tend to get impatient with weakness - hence, a weakness of my own!!

I think I’m a cross between Carla and Lee. Mary’s husband was a total jerk with no redeeming qualities.

I found that I identified with Lee in many ways (among other reasons, Lee happens to be my middle name and is often my nickname). Her intense commitment to her client and her work is appealing, and her fears of growing old give her vulnerability. Also, her willingness to advocate for gay people and her warm relationship with her elderly father are additional qualities that add to her appeal. Overall, I found Lee to be an delightfully likable main character.

I was also captivated by Carla, the private investigator who works for Lee. She is funny, hard-working, outrageous, and altogether a complete charmer. These strong female characters are the core of this novel's appeal.

I most admired Lee. I would like to have her as my friend, but I am afraid she would find me boring. She attracted loyalty from those closest to her. Even those who opposed her in court respected her. The writer had the ability to create likable characters as well as very unlikable characters. I hope this is not the last time a reader can connect with Lee Issac.

Ok-I think I've made in perfectly clear in my other posts about this book that my very least favorite character was Jeremy's mom! haha As I think about it, I might actually have a bit more understanding about her choices IF Mary's husband was Jeremy's biological father. Mary and Jeremy were a team first. Mary was all Jeremy had in that home. When making the decision to remarry with children from a previous relationship, I really think the parent needs to be THAT MUCH MORE contemplative. I have heard that this is the order in relationships: God, spouse, children. I struggle with this order because children are the most needy and vulnerable members in a household. In a second marriage children are already reeling from possible abandonment issue from the parent you left. They definitely need more attention, support, and reassurance. Jeremy was first abandoned by his biological father- -and then his mother. I know moms aren't perfect; we make a lot of mistakes- -but I just really struggle with the fact that Jeremy's mom didn't choose him.

I really liked Carla, Lee, and Phil. I think together the three of them made a great team. Their individual characteristics brought a little bit of everything to the table, and as a result, they made for a competent, well-rounded, REAL team.

I am a Lee, for sure. Highly verbal introvert who can speak in public when required, but much prefers downtime alone or with a very few trusted others.

Least favorite character? Jeremy's father. Controlling, misogynistic prig. Cruel in the name of religion.
