Of course. I think if we each live long enough, our lives give us plenty of opportunities to question ourselves, either because we are no longer taking satisfaction in something that used to give us joy or from seeing the diminishing of a skill. But next chapters can be even more exciting than past ones if we are open.

Seldom have I had another's life or livelihood in my hands, which is what Lee has each time she takes a case. After years of being a public defender I think I would burn out too. You would have to question yourself if you still had what it takes to do your job.

I am a pretty confident person. I trust in my judgement and decision making. I seek additional input and research, then base my opinion in fact. Luckily, I guess I never hit that low spot in my career where I lost confidence. Quit was not a word in my vocabulary.

Sometimes I get tired and worn out. I own a business with 260 employees. Sometimes I get afraid that I will make a bad decision. Sometimes I get tired when it feels like employees don't see that I do things and make decisions with them in the front of my mind. But thankfully that is not often. I truly love my company and employees as a whole.

I had a terrible boss early in my career who eroded my confidence in myself. After several years of her constant criticism and workaholic behavior, I had hit a low point mentally and psychologically. Luckily, I had started a freelance sideline which eventually helped me find a terrific new job that I loved. As a result, I completely related to Lee's self-doubts after losing an important case.

I was in Human Resources for over 30+ years. In that time I had 3 horrible bosses who found joy in demeaning people and taking them down. I was young with the first and needed my job so I put up with it. I quit the second with a fallback plan in place. I quit the third with no fallback plan but knew my sanity depended on it. I reestablished my career and ego by being a mediator for the state EEOC commission and working for a small business who both showed their appreciation. I think if I was a defense attorney, I'd question myself with every loss encountered.

I was an elementary classroom teacher for 20+ years. While I never lost confidence in my abilities, I lost confidence in the system. And that made going to work EVERY SINGLE DAY for my last year incredibly depressing and demoralizing. As a Spanish teacher in a communications magnet school, I began to feel less respect as an educator and for my subject matter. It was not covered on standardized testing, and other teachers, whether knowingly or not, made me feel as if my job was solely to provide them with their much deserved, 45 minute break from "real teaching".

I have always been very passionate about my subject matter and learning new things myself and wanted more than anything for my students to feel the same way. I think careers that involve helping others have more potential for eroding self confidence. Not only are you responsible for yourself, but also the well being, success, and in some cases, the lives of others. As a result, I spent a lot of time reevaluating what I was doing and how I could improve my presentation to reach all students. Lee questioned herself after the courtroom loss, just as I have questioned myself after learning a student didn't not pass a section of a standardized test.

I did hit low points in my career when I considered making a change for a variety of reasons, but I never lost confidence in my ability to do the job. Usually, my frustration was due to the bureaucracy and red tape involved in the education system. When I finally decided to retire it was not because of the students it was because I couldn’t face another unproductive meeting concerning issues that did not improve the education of students.

Of course, I think most people have, especially after a setback like Lee had. But, while you are searching for that magic answer, something comes along that restores your faith - and your confidence - in you and your abilities.

As I am approaching 65 I am constantly questioning myself as to when I will retire. Anytime things get intense at work, I wonder if I am losing my sharpness because of my age. Much like Lee, I wonder what the catalyst will be that will finally convince me it’s time.

Yes. I had a particular goal in mind that at first appeared to be achievable but dues changes in management and the work environment I had to accept that this was no longer possible. Changing directions is sometimes difficult because of fear of the unknown.

Yes, when a younger woman came in and made everyone think she could do any job better and they believed her. I did not quit, but I certainly felt like I had lost all my abilities.
