What stood out for you about Marra's writing style?

He was able to take a very heavy, deep, emotional subject and make it readable and tolerable thru his beautiful use of words. I loved his writing style! I reread many of the passages just to digest his lovely writing style. Am anxiously awaiting his next novel.

His ability to paint and environment and characters so well and still keep the story moving and things happening was very impressive to me. So often setting the scene and introducing characters is a little boring but Marra did it exquisitely. Also, with a relatively small group of characters he told a huge story and introduced event after event both past and present to bring us the closing pages. A constellation of events that could only seem to end as the book, in fact, did end.

It was wonderful. A masterful use of words. Written so well you want to go back and reread many of the beautiful passages.

The best part of the book was Marra's writing style. I found myself reading passages to my friends who then got excited and read the book.

Marra could write lyrically about even the darkest events.

Rhapsodic, concise straightforward prose. Outstanding.

The style is very readable, especially given the complexity of the story, the movement in time periods and the character development. Once I got into the novel, I felt comfortable with Marra's style .

Depth, complexity and passion all used to layer characters, plot, politics and geography to explore the human connections that define a life. Stunningly beautiful and moving. A memorable read.

The book is beautifully written about a complex and violent part of the world. At first, I had issues with his character development by moving between different time periods, but once you just go with it, it is a wonderful and very moving book and you really care about the characters and their ability to survive in so much chaos and horrific situations.
