When Dot visits her mother after being married, she "felt distant from her, as if she was a foreigner and a great ocean separated them." In what ways has Dot changed? Why is Dot's mother unwilling to meet William? Do you agree with her decision?

Dot worked hard and luckily married her love. Dot bettered her position in life. She saw the position of her Mother and realized that everyone's life changed over the years.

Dot has become so self confident and capable after her marriage. She dreamed of her husband as Katherine had of Thomas Seymour. It was nice to have someone whose faith in another is rewarded. Dot's mother recognized how far her daughter had risen and how educated she had become. Seeing her mother helps us understand this. I think her mother was content knowing her daughters would be fine. She wanted to spare herself and her son in law the discomfort of two people meeting who have nothing in common and who come from such different worlds.

Dot grew from a meek servant to a rather accomplished young woman who had the good fortune to marry the man of her dreams and live a happy life. I think her mother was proud of her and recognized that in bettering herself, dot had moved beyond her

Young Dot was lucky. She married for love. Her mother did not want to embarrass herself or Dot's William. I respect the author her insight into the character of Dot's mother. As I stated before, the details of this story are rich and well thought out. Congratulations for a wonderful book.
