What other books did this remind you of?

Although the book I am about to mention is very different, I occasionally thought of Eat,Love,Pray by Elizabeth Gilbert only because the female protagonist in Gilbert's book was fed up with her relationships and simply wanted out of her current setting.

The obsessive nature of a love interest in "All the Ugly and Wonderful Things" was also intense, albeit the love was mutual between the two people and it had a happier ending.

It reminded me a lot of The Other Black Girl in that we see Black women in the workplace and feeling like they have to justify their presence there. I also thought of Queenie and the microaggressions, often sexual, that she experiences.

I haven’t read anything like this novel that spoke to me as both a Black woman and as someone who lived and worked overseas. It’s a unique yet common experience and I like how the author conveyed that feeling and fact.

It's not so much that another book reminded me of this one but that it, Beautiful Country, by Quien Julie Wang, caused the same feelings and realizations afterwards. In my extreme naevite, I thought if a refugee wanted to come to another country and finally escapes all of the horrors of their old lives, they could move forward. I never thought about the amount of work it would take to assimilate into a new country. The financial hardships, the emotional trauma of losing all things familiar and experiencing entirely new types of persecution just never occurred to me.
I can truly see why Muna felt her situation was hopeless.
