Muna experiences a tremendous amount of loss in the novel. What do her experiences show of the struggles refugees go through when displaced from their homes?

RE: What do Muna's experiences show...

Muna was by far the most sympathetic character in the book. I was sorry how her story went. Immigrants have it difficult. They want the same things that everyone wants for their loved ones. But people tend to see them as intruders, someone who will "take away their jobs". And that is such a joke when you see the kind of jobs they are able to get! Muna looked for love and acceptance. which we all do. For them everything is difficult, not knowing the languages, the cultural changes adn being treated with respect. Just getting out of their country is a feat! Then they are treated so poorly in general, sometimes even by their fellow countrymen. Will we welcome the Afghanistan refuges??

Muna was alone and totaly responsible for herself.Instead of arriving in a new country ready to start getting acclimated to her new surroundings, Muna has to struggle with the basics of survival, financially and emotionally, repeatedly. It seems as if as soon as she starts making progress in one area, obstacles arise in another. I think her isolation compounded her sense of feeling overwhelmed.

I think I'm writing about Muna the author gives us some insights into how traumatic it must be to flee one's country of origin to go another where one's values and traditions are not understood. And then to be alone in this new and confusing world without much or no support further complicates the situation. I think My A's situation shows how vulnerable people without connections.

Muna’s experiences show how difficult it can be when leaving a home country if there’s no effective support system in place. Emotional and psychological needs are as important as physical shelter and providing work.

I admired Muna for how she threw herself into new situations that would improve her life, and empathized with her as her every friend and opportunity seemed to be taken away from her. That's a great question about refugees from Afghanistan.

I have never been a refugee, but this story of Muna was so sad and it makes you realize that losing a family along with a "home' that you loved is devastating. She was young and vulnerable and yet still open to new possiblities. It was insightful to read this while the United States is taking in Afghanistan refugees. They need so much more than just shelter and security, their lives have been turned upside down through no fault of their own. I hope they are all treated well and given chances wherever they get settled.

RE: What do Muna's experiences show...

I thought that Muna's story is a good example of the journey of a refugee is horrific - the hard part is often once they have survived the journey and in a "safer" place that is often hardest for a refugee, especially as a woman and/or especially one that does not any family/friends with them.

There is usually help at the beginning for refugees but quickly diminishes as the refugee becomes acclimated to their "new" country - and a lot of times the refugees check off the criteria for staying in the country and once that is done - they are left to survive on their own.

This is not to say that the refugees are not grateful but it is often the hosting country that does not plan for this and/or the citizens of the hosting country that influence the gov't not to provide the necessary support (and often the hosting country does not provide the support services for its own citizens).

Muna's story is heart wrenching and so tragic. I'm sure it's an accurate depiction of what so many refugees face. I thought it was brave of this author to be real about the struggle of refugees and not sugarcoat their experiences. So many people look down upon and blame refugees for many of their country's problems without trying to understand their struggles and desires to be productive members of society.

Muna's experiences perfectly describe the life of a refugee. The trip is often bad enough but then the survival in the new place is just as hard or harder. The U.S. is well known for its lack of follow-through, but here we are reading about Sweden. So. It's always hard when you come as a stranger to a new country and worse when you are a different colour or are all alone - even though you may not have started out alone.

I liked Muna and really wanted her to find a good life. I kept hoping good things would happen for her. Muna is an example of what it is like for refugees coming into any country where they have little knowledge of the people. I just finished a book about refugees coming to America and I feel they go though the same problems. I felt so sad for her.

I'm pretty sure the author's depiction of Muna's struggles are very close to real life experiences for refugees. It is so poignant to read this now while many Afghanistan refugees are arriving. I pray each one gets the support they need....and for as long as they need it!

I think refugees are some of the bravest people ever. The things they go through to leave their country and go to another country as something that I don't know I would be strong enough to do. I've read several books recently related to refugees, and this part of the book stands out as one of the best I've read.
