Why do you think Muna's relationships are transient, and what do you think the author is conveying in her relationship with Yagiz?

Throughout the novel, Muna develops many short-lived relationships, with the longest being her uncomfortable acquaintance with Yagiz. Why do you think these relationships are transient, and what do you think the author is conveying in her relationship with Yagiz?

Great question. I forgot about Yagiz until now. He's such a disgusting character - a bully, a misogynist, an abuser. I think he may be a counterpoint to Jonny in the book - though that's not the question bring asked I know - because Jonny has these characteristics somewhat too. I think Yagiz in relationship to Muna represents a fear she has about men and about closeness in general. He is everything she doesn't want to be close to but he is part of her need for a job and a desire to help her friend, Yasmin. But as in everything she tries to connect to, it breaks down or goes away.

Muns has lost her family which was her bedrock. She’s looking for her family in the people she meets and when she’s disappointed it only magnifies her loss so she continues moving through people looking for what she can’t find.

Muna had to flee her country (and thus her culture) for her own safety and along that journey also lost her mother and brother and landed in a country/culture that she needed to learn to navigate on her own and then everyone that she begins to trust and become close to die or disappear from her life. And that wore her down emotionally.

Her relationship with Yagiz, I thought was trying to connect back to Yasmin and making sure she is okay. And then Yagiz was able to provide a job for Muna which she knows is her connection to becoming a Swedish citizen which seemed the only goal she currently has in her life.

I think because her small group consists of immigrants trying to assimilate in whatever ways work for them. That means their interactions are always changing and moving in and out of each other's circles.
Her relationship with Yagiz ( she would probably hate to call it even that!) was a necessary evil and unavoidable.

I agree with beckyd. Everyone Muna associated with was also a refugee. Each person has to move and make changes that suit their needs.
