I felt that her experience as a mail-order bride was no different from human trafficking or slave trade. She seemed to have very little protection and was afraid to counter her "husband."

Yes, I think many woman want to escape a difficult situation and choose what they think is a solution -only to discover that the reality of the "new" is as bad or worse than what they left. When the have a "marriage" where they are controlled and threatened with a forced return, would liken this to a type of "legal" trafficking or abuse.

Human trafficking has gotten a lot of publicity lately as has been often confused with smuggling. In smuggling the people are a willing participant. In human trafficking they are not. So no, I do not see mail order brides as human trafficking.

No. The women go into it knowing the down side but they are desperate to get out of their situation. It is similar to arranged marriages. The difference is that in arranged marriages it is often the case that families are looking for similar culture, values, education etc.m Russia has had mail order brides for ages with the hopes for the women that they will have a better life.
