What do you see as Unity's strengths? Why don't others notice them? Does she gain new talents in Germany?

Unity thinks that the only thing that distinguishes her from her sisters is her awkwardness. What do you see as her strengths? Why don't others notice them? Does she gain new talents in Germany, or does the situation bring out aspects of her personality that were hidden previously?

RE: What do you see as Unity's ...

Unity could have been such an extraordinary asset to the British government during and before World War II. Her strengths included persistence, forthrightness, facility with learning German, as well as being able to win the trust of Hitler and many of his officers. I think she felt left out of the Mitford pack - never saw herself as beautiful or accomplished, and yet, took a direction that the other sisters, even Diana, could not.

Unity’s strengths included that she was unwavering in her beliefs (for example, her commitment to fascism despite her family’s early leaning), determined and willing to act in order to achieve her desired outcomes (for example, finding a way to get to school in Germany to be closer to the action), and creative and strategic in her thinking (for example, learning where Hitler would be and then finding ways to be in his path). While she may not have developed new strengths in Germany, Unity’s confidence grew and she found her voice as she felt a sense of belonging and respect from those around her who appreciated her strengths, unlike what she had experienced with her family.

RE: What do you see as Unity's ...

Unity was the fifth child in her family with a disinterested mother. Her three older sisters were media favorites at that time. Unity wanted praise and attention too. She was smart, tenacious and extremely loyal. In the Nazi party she was able to use her skills to help promote and strengthen a cause she was passionate about. She also received praise and recognition she hadn’t received from her family.

Unity seems to feel out of place and unloved along her older sisters. She has determination, passion and sees no obstacles to her quest so profound is her drive. She’s the sister who interested me the most. She was under appreciated and she used it to her advantage

Unity was a dark horse. Probably the least attractive of the sisters, she was certainly the least popular so people tended to underestimate her. But once she found something she believed in (right or wrong), she was all in. Her intelligence and passion for her cause allowed her to achieve results in terms of gaining access to Hitler's inner circle and helping her sister and Mosley.

I agree the Unity could have used her determination and persistence for good, however she felt that the Nazi agenda was the way. I somehow feel that the idea of power and control spoke to her feelings about her role in the family - she wanted to find her place, and she certainly did.
She was obviously intelligent but lacked self confidence and her success in Germany gave her that boost she needed.

Unity’s strength was her persistence and single-mindedness to the extent she was oblivios or maybe uncaring as to any ramifications of her actions or thouhhts

I also agree that Unity's strength was her use of determination and persistence and it is unfortunate that her family did not see how this could be used in a positive way to help the British government instead of being shunned by her family in so many ways. Plus Unity needed to see herself in a more positive light in that she had many strengths that did not have to depend on Hitler's praise.

You have to admit Unity was one determined young woman. Returning to the same tea shop each day, getting involved with SS members to get information on the whereabouts of “Mein Fuhrer.” She was also fiercely loyal. Had her own family and later country recognized these strengths, we might have seen a very different outcome for her.

Resourcefulness, determination and loyalty are a few of Unity’s strength's, but they were not recognized by her family. Each sister was to some extent pigeoned holed. Diana was the beauty, Nancy the clever one, and “poor Bobo” was clumsy and awkward. She blossomed in the fascist world and unfortunately it was her downfall.

Her determination and undying loyalty, while her strengths, were also her ultimate demise. I agree; what an asset she would have been to Great Britain.

RE: What do you see as Unity's ...

In Germany Unity does not have her sisters around her, so she compares herself to them. She becomes more comfortable with her height and, therefore, not so awkward. Her admiration for Hitler makes her come out of her shell. She is determined to help him. She is convinced that Germany and England together would be the way to go.

RE: What do you see as Unity's ...

Unity's strength was her determination and her passion for what she believed in. Once she found her niche there was no turning back. She was willing to give her life for what she believed in and Hitler was certainly able to use her for what he wanted to accomplish. Front page news in Great Britain. Even though she was a strong Nazi, you had to feel compassion for her; the way both Hitler and her own sister used her.

Unity certainly didn’t have much self esteem, thinking herself as not attractive and “awkward.” But she was tenacious and obsessive in her belief in Hitler and her determination to get close to him. It was amazing that she did so.

I don’t see her single mindedness as a strength because she carried it too far. The woman seemed to have no “stoppers.” She was hungry for attention and validation, and Hitler knew how to use that.
